Whilst browsing Facebook…

… I came across this article 10 Popular Foods British People Secretly Hate which contains this graphic. As I have a fair few followers from around the globe I wonder if you guys are lovers or haters of any of these too? The graphic’s not the best so the foods are from most hated to least hated (left to right) Anchovies, Chicken Liver, Olives, Black Pudding, Blue Cheese, Goats Cheese, Avacado, Brussel Sprouts, Salami and Mushrooms.  I’m a Brit and must confess that Anchovies and Olives for me are something I eat but don’t love, I’m not a fan of goats cheese that is definitely true and I can handle blue cheese if it’s a part of something else. I LOVE chicken livers, salami, mushrooms and sprouts but really can not stomach avocado. So I guess for me some of this is true.  Oh I forgot black pudding… I love this if it is a good one but you can get some pretty dire varieties which I avoid at all costs. I’ve not eaten any for a long time as I only like it fried and I think it has a high fat content before adding it to the fryer so it’s a no no for me.

Just as an edited note I didn’t realise that black pudding was so specific to us Brits, it’s like a sausage which is made of pig blood soaked up by grains, usually oatmeal and forced into a black shiny skin. I’m assuming this used to be intestine like sausages were made with and the pudding inside used to colour the skin or show black through it but I guess synthetic black skins are used now. Where I come from it’s usually sliced quite thickly and shallow fried, often in fat which has had bacon fried in it already. If you get a high quality one it’s pretty yummy but deteroriates in flavour and consistency the cheaper it gets (as with many things).  This is what wiki has to say about it

  1. I don’t like anchovies and while I like salami I wouldn’t say I love it. And can’t forget the black pudding- what the heck is it? Never had it or heard of it. But the rest- LOVE!

    1. I’ve amended my post to clarify what black pudding is, it’s a kind of sausage type thing made of oatmeal soaked in pig blood and squeezed into a sausage skin then sliced or diced and shallow fried. It sounds horrendous but it can be very tasty especially a good quality one.

  3. Huh? I can’t imagine why people would be so secretive about disliking foods. We had black pudding the other night. It’s more of a brown these days, the skin casing was brownish when I peeled it off. But it was black by time I fried it. We couldn’t get them in our supermarket at one stage – something about the rules being changed using offal – I suppose pig’s blood is that! The one we get now isn’t quite as good, but yum none-the-less. Oh heck, now I’m just going to have to go have a couple of stuffed olives from the jar in the fridge … now that you mentioned olives. Hmm, perhaps a toasted cheese, onion and olive sandwich? Yes, it’s lunchtime. I’ll work really hard at exercise … next week. I’m not too far over in the overweight column on your chart. If I was an inch taller, it’d be good. 🙂
